A Journey Through the Art, Ideas, and Music That Shape the West

Wondering what to do over Labor Day weekend? Why not bask in the sun, listen to great music, check out amazing artwork, and dance the night away! The Summit Institute’s Westbound Festival, a four day tribute to the best in music, art, and thought that the West has to offer, makes its debut at Deer Valley Resort’s Snow Park Lodge and Amphitheater.

Bringing a blend of rock, folk, funk and newgrass, you can expect appearances from 10,000 Maniacs, Merl Saunders & His Funky Friends, The Clumsy Lovers, Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand, and tons of local talent. For a meager $9, you can set up a chair or blanket at the Deer Valley Amphitheater lawn each day and listen to great bands all day long.

During stage breaks, you can wander into the Snow Park Lodge for a glimpse of rare photos from Ansel Adams Masterworks Collection, or feast your eyes on the funky, colorful patterns of contemporary and antique quilts. Navajo baskets and rugs are on display, and Navajo weavers will be demonstrating how these wears are crafted. Local artists from the Park City Gallery Association will be selling artwork, as well as demonstrating pottery, weaving, and horsehair hitching.

Noted Western authors will give readings every hour of the entire festival weekend, and cowboy poets will give readings during stage breaks. You’ll want to observe the creation of some “live art”-local sculptors and painters will be creating new works the duration of the Festival. Watch out for bears, eagles, and wolves. Some of these furry and winged guests will join us from Vital Ground and the Hogle Zoo.

Hours of operation will be 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, September 1st; noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, September and Sunday (September 2nd & 3rd); and noon to 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 4th.
